| Event: Agriculture 2020: "What's Your Vision?" April 12, 2007 Sheraton Hotel Saskatoon, SK Have you ever wagered a guess as to what agriculture and rural communities will look like 2020 or even 2040? What major crops will be grown on the prairies? What will farms look like? Will environmental concerns impact farming practices? What role will technology play? Who will be the major industry players?
Through the KIS Project's Agriculture 2020: What's Your Vision? conference (held Thursday, April 12 in Saskatoon, SK) twelve individuals shared their visions for agriculture in the year 2020. Creativity abounded and discussion was provoked as conference attendees probed for more detail on each vision. Each presentation followed from a 2000-word essay each presenter had written. The essays were written as speculative pieces to encourage discussion and dialogue about the future of agriculture on the Canadian prairies. While the events described in the essays are based in part on current trends and projections, they are not necessarily predictions of what is going to happen nor ones to which the author subscribes. Rather, the essays should be viewed as imaginative pieces that explore what the future might hold and that are specifically designed to raise questions for the reader.
